We Dared to Win: The SAS in Rhodesia Free Audiobook Download by Hannes Wessels
Hannes Wessels's novel We Dared to Win: The SAS in Rhodesia is an audiobook that tells the story of some young soldiers who ventured out into a hostile land and fought against insurmountable odds. They eventually had to move on to another country because of the war. This book, narrated by Roger Clark, was ten years in the making as it is based off of notes, journals, and written accounts that were all collected over a number of years.
In order to understand the complexity of the British counter-insurgency in Rhodesia, one must understand who the enemy was and how they functioned. The Rhodesian Security Forces (Rhodesian Special Air Service) were tasked with fighting back against the guerrilla forces of Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and Joshua Nkomo's Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). In light of these fierce struggles, the SAS fought for their survival in a war that would ultimately determine which party would reign supreme.
We Dared to Win: The SAS in Rhodesia is a memoir by Hannes Wessels. The book is told through his personal account of the SAS in Rhodesia during the 1960s. The book was published in 2012 and includes a preface written by Hannes Wessels himself. The SAS was stationed in Rhodesia, Africa as part of the British attempt to prevent any further political unrest in the region by counter-terrorism tactics. They were armed with rifles and carbines, pistols, and grenades.
'Roger Clark' narrates this audiobook about the British Special Air Service out of Rhodesia. In 1965, they entered a territory that was controlled by black nationalists and successfully took it over. They had to defend themselves against guerrilla forces and then subdue them. The SAS knew that their mission would be dangerous, but they did it anyway because they thought it was worth the risk.
The book starts with a quote from General Godwin-Austen's memoirs about the Rhodesian Bush War. The conflict was described as “a war of men, a war of weapons, a war of ideas” and in which 'nothing is impossible'. Roger Clark provides an audio-only recreation of the story as told by Hannes Wessels and his team in South Africa.
In the early 1970s, two groups of white mercenaries were fighting for control of Rhodesia. The opposing sides were called the Rhodesian Security Forces (RSF) and Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA). The RSF had a British military unit known as the SAS to back them up. This audiobook tells the story of how they battled ZANLA in battles that were sometimes very close to each other.
