Truth Be Told: Three Classic Black Women's Narratives Free Audiobook Download by Erica Armstrong Dunbar

Erica Armstrong Dunbar's three short stories exploring the lives of women of color in America during the decades before and after World War II represent a rare window into what was once called "Negro" life. The characters are all working-class, underprivileged African-American women who struggle to make ends meet with just enough dignity intact. But those seemingly impossible goals can't even begin to compare to their biggest challenge: surviving the world around them.

Black women's narrative can be found in many forms of literature. Whether it is in books, magazines, or on the radio, these narratives are important to understand because they draw attention to the challenges that black women face within society. The three classic narratives reviewed in this blog are "Beloved", by Toni Morrison; "If Beale Street Could Talk", by James Baldwin; and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", by Maya Angelou.

"Truth Be Told: Three Classic Black Women's Narratives" is a narrative audiobook written and narrated by Erica Armstrong Dunbar. It centers on three black women, two living in the present day and one of them living in the past. One of these narratives is about a woman who was raped by her father when she was young and dealt with this trauma for many years because she felt that she wasn't worth anything. Another focuses on a female protagonist who never wanted to be "properly married" but finds herself expected to settle down as soon as her life gets better. The final narration is about the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for music composition-- Alice Coltrane.

Three African American women recount the events that shaped their lives in this audiobook. These stories showcase the difficulties that black people have faced over history and how these trials have played a role in shaping who they are as a group and individuals

This is the first audiobook I have listened to in many years. The narrator was wonderful, and the stories were fascinating. I thought it was a little strange that the first story in particular had so many men as the focus. These stories span across time and provide insight into black women's experiences.
