The Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain's Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb Again Free Audiobook Download by Jim Davidson
Death is inevitable on Everest. As a matter of fact, the mountain has claimed the lives of more than 200 climbers since Hillary and Tenzing's first ascent in 1953. But it wasn't until one day in May 1996 that the tragic statistics hit close to home for Jim Davidson and his climbing partner, Tim Campbell.
Everest is the most dangerous mountain on earth. The deadliest day on Everest has occurred, and it doesn't matter if you are an experienced climber or a complete novice. Jim Davidson wasn't just a climber in a previous life, he was also an elite soldier who fought in the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for his bravery and strong leadership abilities. This book is about how he overcame one of the darkest periods of his life by finding strength to keep going against all odds, and what we can learn from Davidson's journey as we chase our dreams and try to improve our lives.
On May 10th, 2015, Spencer Osman and I were in our tent when a massive avalanche swept through the Khumbu Icefall. We survived the avalanche but lost everything and everyone else in our team. After this ordeal, Spencer and I had to cross a new mountain - Everest's Northeast Ridge. For me, that meant accepting that my life would never be the same again.
On May 24, 1996, Jim Davidson set out to climb the world's tallest mountain, Everest. The day was clear, so he and his three other climbers thought they would attempt the second summit. Beyond them was a weather system that would hit them with hurricane-force winds within hours. At 8:30 p.m., as they tried to negotiate their way up a final slope to reach higher ground, the gargantuan storm struck and Davidson found himself standing in waist-deep snow fighting for survival.
After a long climb, the adventurers were sitting near Camp 3 at 26,000 feet for a break when they heard a heavy rumbling coming from behind them. Two minutes later, an avalanche struck and engulfed them in darkness and a rush of snow. When they awakened from the snowstorm, it was night-time and the temperature had dropped to -60 degrees Fahrenheit [-48 degrees Celsius].
When Jim Davidson and Tim Campbell set off for Mount Everest in 2007, they had no idea that their expedition would turn into a disaster. The two climbers were among the first to reach the summit of Everest on their second try when nearly 8,000 feet of snow collapsed upon them, killing nine men and five Sherpas. They achieved what they set out to do, but were unable to take any selfies with the world's highest peak as souvenirs.
