The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women: A Social History Free Audiobook Download by Elizabeth Norton

Tudor women have often been portrayed as only interested in their homes, children, and domestic business. This audiobook gives a different insight into the lives of Tudor women by looking at their social world and how what they did at home could be done for society at large.

One of the many upsides to being a Tudor woman was anonymity. The Tudor era was one of the most gendered periods in history and women were expected to remain submissive, largely invisible and unheard. All that changed when Elizabeth Norton sat down with historian Jennifer M. Dixon to narrate her new book about Tudor women during the reigns of Henry VIII and Mary I, entitled The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women: A Social History. In this interview, Elizabeth discusses why it is important for historians to hear from the perspectives of women who lived 400 years ago, what we can gain from studying their lives and what we lose by not knowing their stories.

In 'The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women, Elizabeth Norton explores how commoners and aristocrats lived during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth I. Norton looks at how a woman's worth was based on her ability to produce children and how many aristocratic families had to be careful not to have too large an impact on the gene pool.

The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women is an audiobook that tells the overlooked story of women in England during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is a social history that takes on the questions: what did women do all day? What did they think about? The narrators use first-person narration to tell the story through their experiences of living in Tudor England. The book makes it clear from the beginning that historians have been overlooking some important parts of history when looking solely at male figures.

Elizabeth Norton begins her description of the Tudor court with a focus on the Queen, Anne Boleyn. Queen Anne was a fiercely intelligent woman who could have turned England into an enlightened country had she not been stripped of everything by King Henry VIII. She was the type of woman that would have been seen as a heroine in today's society. Elizabeth Norton then moves on to discuss other women in the Tudor court, including prostitutes, noblewomen, and middle-class women. The book is set in the time period between 1485 and 1603 and covers many different aspects of daily life such as education, work, religion, leisure activities and children.

This audio book is a narrator's rendition of Elizabeth Norton's groundbreaking history, "The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women: A Social History". Dixon covers the lives of women from all classes in Tudor England to help tell the story of this overlooked demographic. The text opens with some general information about the era, but then digs into aspects such as gender inequality, marriage, childbearing and childrearing, social care for the elderly and disabled individuals in addition to slavery and other types of oppression.
