I was fifty-two years old when I decided to come off of my mood stabilizer and enter a full-blown manic episode. I knew this was a decision that would ultimately kill me, but I had good reason to go through with it. Years of depression and anxiety had taken their toll on the person that I once was, and after the birth of my grandson, I felt like I didn't deserve to live anymore. But one evening at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, someone told me about lithium for bipolar disorder. When the doctor prescribed me two doses of lithium, my life changed forever.
