The author, Dr. Brian Weiss, is a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of people with dissociative identity disorder and other psychological injuries. His book recounts a case study of his young patient named 'Joan' and how he helped her through different therapeutic methods that consisted of therapy in which she would regress to various past lives, as well as hypnosis therapy. Dr. Weiss finds that Joan's identity has been fractured into many different personalities because of trauma from childhood sexual abuse and neglect by her parents during her childhood years that led to the condition. Yet, this book also teaches readers ways to heal from trauma, specifically by healing their mind and body through holistic methods such as diet change and exercise
