Gottlob Herbert Bidermann was a German soldier who fought in World War II. He was shot many times and suffered from severe frostbite during the battle of Stalingrad. This memoir is his personal account of events that happened as a part of the Battle of Stalingrad.
The book begins in 1939 with Bidermann and his family fleeing Germany to escape the Nazis. They are forced to live in very poor conditions and he is able to get a job as a farmhand while his father works as a chauffeur. One day, Bidermann is drafted into the army and assigned to a reconnaissance unit. As fighting intensifies, he is posted on the Eastern Front where he sees his first battle. He recounts his experiences of battles, such as when he comes across Russian soldiers making their way up a hill ahead of him, who suddenly turn around and open fire. Another story tells about how he began carrying ammunition for his rifle because it was easier to carry than extra rations
