Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest Free Audiobook Download by Hanif Abdurraqib
Not just a great album, but an audiobook. I'm not saying that to sound like a hipster either; this book has notes in it and is read by the author himself so you can really get into it.
"A Tribe Called Quest is a group that has been both loved and hated, revered as visionary pioneers of hip-hop and criticized for their controversial lyrics that seem to talk only about black people." says Hanif Abdurraqib in his preface. A Tribe Called Quest is a U.S. hip-hop group that was one of the first groups to bring more mainstream attention to socially conscious rap music. One of the songs in this book was "Go Ahead in the Rain" which was originally released in 1992 on Midnight Marauders album.
The audiobook of Go Ahead in the Rain was very interesting. The narrator had a great voice that truly made you feel like he was telling his own story. I could hear the pain, joy and despair in his voice as he spoke about how he grew up on the southside of Chicago.
Hanif Abdurraqib's powerful, deep memoir of his father, Hanif Sr., who died at age 39 was released in 2016. It wasn't until the release of his book that the author realized how much he loved his father and wanted to share him with the world. Abdurraqib has been quoted saying that he would never have written a memoir if it weren't for A Tribe Called Quest's music and their "MOVE BACK IN THE RAIN" lyrics.
The audiobook is an excellent resource for the listener who wants to find out more about the formation of A Tribe Called Quest as well as the lyrics and music of any song from the album.
