Be the Refuge: Raising the Voices of Asian American Buddhists Free Audiobook Download by Chenxing Han
This is a great audiobook for all spiritual seekers and those who wish to learn about the Asian American Buddhist experience. I particularly loved the first part of this book where the author shares her own personal journey, how she came to be a Buddhist and her different experiences with the spiritual community. The second half was more geared towards other aspects of Buddhism such as what it means to be a Theravada Buddhist or Zen Buddhist.
Jennifer Aquino's read of this audiobook is commendable. Although her voice sounds youthful and higher pitched than that of the author, she lends a lot of emotion to the book. She also does a good job at differentiating between characters in order to keep the listener engaged. This book would be best listened to by those who are looking for a new perspective on Buddhist teachings and their relevance in society today.
In this book, author Chenxing Han speaks to the fact that Asian Americans struggle with their identity and the journey of finding their own spiritual home.
This memoir takes you through the author's journey to find herself and her spiritual practice in Buddhism. In this audiobook, Han shares her personal experiences with family members and friends who are all different ethnicities, growing up in America and living in China. The author also discusses how they experience being Buddhist as Asian Americans through various cultural events like going to temples or Zen centers. While this book shares personal stories, it also offers concrete advice on how to raise your voice and be a voice of hope for others.
Told from the perspective of three Buddhist women, this audiobook is a compilation of essays on privilege and identity, on how to speak up for ourselves both as Asian Americans and Buddhists. The author speaks about how she was raised in a family where her parents were committed to the faith, but she was not allowed to sit in her father's shoes - a common problem for many young Asian American women today.
This audiobook cover several topics such as: how to choose a dharma teacher and how to look for wisdom within, understanding the process of change, what it means to be an activist, how immigrants can be more than just consumers and more. There is also advice given on choosing tenants.
