The novel follows a Muslim family, the Abi-Amalas. The story begins with the older generation of the family who are mourning the death of their son, who passed away while in Saudi Arabia. The younger generation, who live in America and cannot afford to be too close to one another, mourns his passing with a secret that is kept throughout most of the book.
