From the publisher: "Pilgrims, torchbearers, mountaineers and lone women, who were they? Where are they now? And what has become of them?" The author, Annabel Abbs, was born in Walthamstow on 4th November 1904 and it is her memory of these women that she has recorded in this history. She sets out to answer the question of what led these women to walk a path through life uncharted by their contemporaries.
The author, Annabel Abbs, explores the lives of female trailblazers through her own research and interviews. In this audiobook, she walks the paths of women who have been overlooked in history books or have had their stories erased from its pages. Shielded as children by their families and communities, these women were forced to seek their identities elsewhere. The author provides a comprehensive guide to understanding how women can survive in a male-dominated society where they are often silenced by patriarchal ideals of femininity.
This week, I will be traveling the wide and varied paths of women who have been pioneers in their fields. Women like Louisa May Alcott, who wrote Little Women, Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to graduate from an American medical school, and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of famed aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. The idea for this particular book came about when I noticed that there are not enough books about female pioneers and women who have achieved great things. There is a large need for these stories that have not yet been told; these stories show women from a range of backgrounds with diverse opinions on their experiences.
Windswept is the story of 100 pioneering women, which includes the likes of Helen Keller, Marie Curie and Florence Nightingale. This audiobook is a perfect blend of history and biography which helps to appreciate the various contributions these women have made towards shaping our modern world.
During the course of her journey across eleven countries, Annabel Abbs wrote a book about some of the most extraordinary women she encountered. She was an accidental traveler who started out writing what would eventually become 'Windswept: Walking the Paths of Trailblazing Women' on her laptop while hiking through Italy. Her experience of walking and traveling extensively with only one backpack bolstered her desire to chronicle the journeys and stories of other women.
