What the Fireflies Knew: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Kai Harris

This is the first audiobook that I have listened to and I have to say, it was a great choice. I loved all of the characters and the plot was intriguing. This story follows protagonist Chloe as she befriends three fireflies and learns about their lives in the different ways that they live-from underground, to on top of a tree, or even in her own backyard.

Kai Harris is an author that features a female protagonist in her work as well as many other diverse stories. The main character in this book, Daija, is a young woman who dreams of opening up her own restaurant and being able to provide for herself and her family. This novel is about love, betrayal, family and how two people can change each other's lives through the decisions made.

From the beginning, Kai Harris has a hard time relating to anyone. The way he talks, the way he acts, even the way he thinks is different and unique. What he learns along the way will break your heart as it unfolds in this novel narrated by Zenzi Williams.

In the novel, Kai Harris speaks to a group of students as they discuss ways to reach out to their community and explore the larger world. When she talks about love, she tells them stories of her grandparents and parents. One particular story is about her grandmother who constantly tried to make sure Kai had everything she needed.

The setting for the story is a dystopian near-future, in which the United States has declared war with Mexico and parts of Canada. The novel follows protagonist Kai Harris, who is caught up in the crossfire between Mexican rebels and US forces. The romantic angle of this story combines two unlikely pairings: Kai and his former love, Ana, and Kai's father and Ana's mother.
