Westward the Tide is a Western novel by Louis L'amour. This adventure novel takes place in 1854 when California was part of Mexico and Columbus Day has been outlawed. The protagonist, Young Billy Stockton, is a man of few words who lives with his parents on a ranch near Shasta City. On vacation from school, Billy convinces his parents to take him to the Gold Rush in California. One night after a bout of heavy drinking, he wakes up and realizes that his father's wagon and the gold coins are gone. He rejoins them on the trail and becomes embroiled in one adventure after another until he finds what he is looking for-the headwaters of the Sacramento River.
Westward the Tide is a story about three different men and their journey to find gold. However, many of the main characters are not what they seem. The narrator begins the story by telling us that one man, Joe Danner, is actually an outlaw on the run from creditors who hold his family hostage. As Joe and his partner set out to make it to Oregon so they can start life anew, they are joined by another man who claims to be a scout in search of gold but is really an emissary for a group of Apaches who have allied with the Mexicans. They then meet another man who calls himself Sam McCall, an idealist with hopes of setting up a new society in Oregon - but he has ulterior motives behind his claim to gold.
The narrator of this audiobook is Robert Petkoff who does a good job with his voice. He makes a deep, powerful voice for the protagonist and does an equally good job making the other characters sound authentic.
