David Thompson's "Trail’s End" was published in 2001. The main character is a man named Rusty Nelson, who has returned to his hometown of Waynesboro, Virginia and is forced to deal with the aftermath of an incident that occurred when he was young. Rusty was just a little boy when he wandered away from home and came across some construction workers building a new town square in his neighborhood. One day, when Rusty went down to this new town square during the day, he found that all the workmen had disappeared and left their equipment behind. One by one, these construction tools appeared to have been stolen or broken. When the last tool was gone, all the concrete blocks formed into a circle, like something out of a fairy tale. After some investigating, Rusty discovered that if you could find nine other people to go inside this circle at exactly the same time, then some kind of door would open revealing...well more secrets than anyone knew what to do with.
When I walked into my first class, it was the last day of school. I didn't know if I should be excited or nervous, but I was both. My teacher Mrs. Matthews handed me a paper that had been passed around all morning. On it, students and teachers had been asked to list the three people they would miss most after graduation. Jimmy was on there with his stupid joke every morning at recess, but also Dr. Ramirez and Mr. Delfs who were always teaching us in our "Intro to American History" class.
After hearing the story of Trail's End narrated by someone else, David Thompson knew he had to have it. The novel was originally released in 1953 and was written by Australian author Thomas Keneally. Trail's End is based on real events that took place during World War I and tells the story of a group of nineteen British soldiers who get stranded in France. They have no idea how they got there and no hope of getting back home. With nothing but the clothes they are wearing, the British soldiers must find their way by any means possible to get back to their country safely before they are killed or captured.
