Louis L'amour was born in 1888 and died in 1988. He wrote his first novel when he was a teenager, and by the age of 20, he had published 12 books. By the time he died, L'amour had written more than 100 novels. Most of his books were set in the American west during the 1800s and 1900s. To Tame a Land is one of them - it was written in 1966.

In To Tame a Land by Louis L'amour, the title character is an American and he is asked to take over from an old friend who has just died and had been running a ranch in Mexico. The ranch was almost totally out of range for all practical purposes, but the owner never found a buyer so he decided to lease it to the US government for use as a training area for soldiers.

"What you do when trouble comes, is the first thing to do," he said. "If they've got guns, then you shoot back. If they've got rocks and sticks, then you smash their skulls with rocks and sticks. If they've got knives, then you cut their throats open."
