The Unheard: A Novel is a vivid and enjoyable story about three women, each at different life stages living in London. After being diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer, the narrator decides to make a bucket list for herself before she has to say goodbye. The novel is written as if it were a letter from the protagonist to her children.
'Olivia 'V'inall ' is the narrator of The Unheard and she does a good job with it. Her voice has a deep, slightly husky property to it that I liked because it sounded more mature than other voices in audiobooks. One of the things I liked about this book is how she changed her voice when someone was speaking with an accent. Her voice took on that accent perfectly making me feel like I was actually listening to someone from the place they were talking about.
The Unheard is a novel about a woman in search of her father's killers, and the men she meets along the way. The story is told from two different perspectives--the killer's and the daughter's. It opens with an American tourist running for her life on an Italian beach. A man catches up to her and says 'I am here to kill you.' He shoots her, but once he has her back at his house, he tells her that he isn't going to kill her because she doesn't speak English. This small bit of information changes everything for our protagonist.
As a single mother, Mia has to make ends meet her and her daughter by working long hours. One day, she notices that her daughter is not getting the attention she needs, so Mia decides to take a job outside of the home in order to get some quality time. Once they are in a new neighborhood close to work, Mia learns that her daughter is running with a bad crowd that's much too tough for her alone.
