The book is written in alternating chapters from the viewpoint of two people who are on different sides of the conflict, Ammy, who is a white woman working with the indians to help share resources, and Hushy, a Chippewa woman living on the reservation.

In the book, Holly Goddard Jones tells a story of a boy named Peter and his father. Peter's father is an expert on salt. They live in a small town that thrives off of salt mining. When they first move to their new home, they notice something strange with the salt that is used to build their house's foundation. They notice that the salt lines are straight and not zigzagging like typical salt rocks are.

The story is told through a series of interviews with different family members as well as newspaper articles and government documents.

As her investigation unfolds, she starts to uncover secrets in town that have been kept for years. While attempting to solve the case and make sure no one else is killed, Hillary also comes closer to understanding her own past.
