Many people have read the book, but have never heard it. The audiobook was a gift to me from a friend and I loved being able to hear it read by the author and narrator.
The Power of the Dog begins with two boyhood friends, Jack Burden and Joe Christmas, who both share a deep love of hunting. Years later, Jack has become an esteemed writer and journalist while Joe is a habitual thief and dumb criminal. At the beginning of the novel, Joe is released from prison after serving his sentence and returns to find his old friend. With nearly nothing left in his life to live for, he convinces Jack that they should embark on a grand hunt for one last trophy: an enormous white-tailed doe. They set out on their journey through the Oklahoma Hills but soon find themselves caught up in a vicious race for power, money and wild game which ensues as they try to stay ahead of other hunters.
The Power of the Dog is a story about a miner and his dog. The miner is named Joe, and one day he finds his dog, Wolf, lying on the side of the road near a pile of snow. Joe decides to save Wolf because he's too weak to stand up. Wolf is unable to walk without help for the rest of his life. Joe falls in love with Wolf and makes him the center of his world. The two build an amazing friendship over many years before Joe dies from cancer. Now, it's up to Wolf to get by on his own as he grows old and feeble while being loved by Joe's family and many friends.
The Power of the Dog: A Novel is a story of an Irish hunter and his dog. The novel tells the story of John Dunbar, who has grown up in Ottawa where he hunts the wolves that roam in packs around him. John and his father are trying to find a wolf on which to capture its mate so they can use them as studs for their hunting dogs. They hunt for years without success until one day when John's luck and his dog's skill pays off when they catch a beautiful wolf that is also pregnant.
At the beginning of The Power of the Dog, Thomas Shay tells a story about his dog's life in the wild. His dog, Baxter, has been living with him and his family for years, but never really lived up to being a working dog. Even though they were constantly hunting and fishing to provide food for themselves, Baxter was more interested in playing frisbee with Shay's sons than actually catching anything. One day after coming home from a long hunt, they found that their beloved animal had eaten nearly all of their bacon curing meat. From then on, he became an expert capable of hunting down game and making them successful hunts.
