The People We Keep Free Audiobook Download by Allison Larkin
The People We Keep is a heartbreaking novel about what happens when your world is suddenly turned upside down and you're thrust into the unknown. When narrator Julia was out on an errand, she makes a wrong turn and ends up in a drug-dealer's house. She calls the police but before they can help, she watches as her best friend is shot dead right in front of her eyes. At first, Julia is frantic, needing to get away from this place but she comes to realize that it's not going to be that easy.
When she says that Clare is a "normal person," she means an average woman and mother. But this is America, where there is no such thing as average. Clare isn't sure who to trust anymore; the FBI, her husband's best friend and business partner, the drug dealers living next door. Even her own son seems more interested in his cereal boxes than in his family. With nowhere else to turn, Clare talks to people--friends like Alice and enemies like Lena--to find out what really happened.
The People We Keep is a suspenseful, thrilling novel that's filled with twists and turns. I love how the author gives us just enough information to keep the story going without letting on too much specific detail. The thing that really hooked me was at the end of every chapter's introduction - we're told all about what happened in the past, but it's always so vague and mysterious. This made me eager for more because I wanted to know what happened next!
