When Amelia Peabody, a British archaeologist, is sent to Cairo in 1882, she hopes to find the long-sought tomb of King Tut's father. Instead, she finds a locked door and an ancient painting of Queen Hatshepsut--a woman who never existed. As Amelia works with her assistant, Archie Quarry (who happens to be her childhood friend), they soon realize that they are on the trail of a dangerous man who is determined to clear the way for his own "queen," a woman who has been dead for three thousand years.
This latest installment of the Amelia Peabody series by Joan Hess and Elizabeth Peters is set in Egypt at the height of Egyptian-British relations. Amelia, her father, Lord Amherst, and Mrs. Hawkins are on an archaeological dig when a tomb is discovered with a mummy inside it. The mummy has been well preserved and in perfect condition but what really sets this mummy apart from others is that it's painted in gold paint. Sadly, before they can analyze the mummy further, the tomb is robbed for its gold paint and the robbers murder Lord Amherst's men. Amelia vows to find out who killed her father.
In this novel, Amelia Peabody is a writer who has been invited by the lady of the house to paint a portrait for her. The painting makes its way around England and becomes a popular subject of conversation and admiration. While she was painting on the estate, she felt as if something was watching her. This feeling only intensifies upon her return to London with the portrait still in hand. The only two things that are certain are that it is not a living person and no one knows how it was brought into the museum where it was put on display. No one can seem to find out how it got there, but Amelia isn't so keen on finding out either.
In this novel, the main character Amelia Peabody is a young Egyptologist who is trying to find the tomb of Nefertari. At the same time, she is also trying to unravel a mystery from her father's past and solve a murder in an attempt to uncover her heritage. When she and her father were living in Egypt, Amelia began searching for artifacts and lost a valuable piece of pottery known as The Painted Queen.
