The Muralist is a short story from B. A. Shapiro, an author who has written many stories which take place in the city of Baltimore during the late 20th century that gives a clear and vivid image of the lives of its inhabitants. The narrator, Xe Sands, is a young woman who needs to make some money to cover her tuition fees as she strives to become an artist. She paints murals at night while working part-time at a convenience store during the day. She meets a man who commissions her work and decides to paint her life with him as the subject matter sounds like it could be fun and exciting. However, things turn dark when Xe starts to find out more about this man and his intentions for her.

The Muralist is a fascinating and captivating historical mystery novel about the art of mural painting in Communist Russia. Having never read anything by Shapiro before, I was very impressed with this book and the narrator's ability to transport me into that time period and make me feel like I was living alongside the characters. There are also some really touching moments in the audiobook which made it even more enjoyable.

This is a masterfully crafted work that explores both the short and tragic life of Jackson Pollock, one of the most influential painters to have emerged from the 1940s New York City avant-garde art scene. As the protagonist loses his way in a web of alcohol and drug addiction, he works toward regaining control over his artwork until tragedy strikes.

B.A. Shapiro is a young artist who travels to the city of Chicago to paint murals for his uncle's factory. His work takes him from hospital wards and schools to the backrooms of local bars, often seeing people in their most raw, vulnerable moments--and realizing that there is no wall he can't find a way to paint over: not even between life and death. The Muralist is one of those stories that haunts you long after you've finished reading it.
