'The Lucky Escape' is the story of a man on a train ride, who is going to London. He meets a woman, and tells her his story about how he came to be in that situation and then she shares hers. The two share dinner together, and after many hours of traveling the woman helps the man escape from the train.

As the story begins, we learn that the narrator's parents are about to go on a research trip for their PhD when their boat is hit by a huge storm. The boat starts to flood and they hear screams coming from above. They manage to climb up but can't find anyone else in the ship. The narrator learns that they were only in it because they were tied off to an anchor. As they make their way back to shore, they spot a capsized boat and catch sight of a naked woman on top of it.They swim over there but realize she is dead and has been eaten alive by swarms of sharks.
