The story is set in France. The protagonist, Jean Perdu, is a solitary middle-aged man who skillfully runs his small bookstore in the remote town of Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast. He lives a quiet life far from the excitement of Paris and he’s content with this existence. But when an elderly woman comes into his store and asks him to find her missing granddaughter, he agrees to help her. Initially, Perdu searches only for Beatrice - but after her grandmother dies suddenly, he realizes that something is amiss and decides to look for them both. With the help of some unique bookshop resources and a motley group of friends from all walks of life - including an overzealous 15-year-old girl, Lucien; Monsieur Dizy, proprietor of a local cheese shop; and Madame Mallory, owner of Le Temps Retrouvé antiques shop - he eventually finds Beatrice in Vienna.
