Forced to leave behind everything they know, the girls find themselves in Taiwan where their uncle immigrates them into his extended family.

Set in the 1980s, it tells the coming-of-age story of Yeong-jin, a Korean boy who leaves his family and village to come to America. Yeong-jin wanted to create a new life for himself in America as he had seen other families doing successfully. He knows little English and soon realizes that the country is not what he expected

The Leavers is the novel of a Chinese American teenager, Adeline Yen Mah. She was adopted by her white parents in America but has been able to maintain her cultural identity and culture with the help of her memories. Her parents are not supportive of her in her college pursuit to become an author and they want to send her back to China. Adeline is determined to make it on her own so she begins trashing everything that reminds her of home including her family's heirlooms and trying to cut herself off from them.
