Born a Catholic, the 13-year-old widowed Queen Elizabeth was raised at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire in an atmosphere that was religiously and politically complicated. In 1559, Elizabeth's world would change forever when her father executed Mary, Queen of Scots.

Living in England during the 16th century was challenging. The country was undergoing a drastic change as it went from English monarchs to English republic and everything in between. In addition, the nation had been attacked and there were death by disease on a daily basis. For those reasons, England began to look towards its past for answers, but what they found was not always pretty. Of course, one woman who kept her head high throughout all this was Queen Elizabeth I, who reigned for nearly 40 years before her death in 1603 at age 52. Her reign saw much success, but also many challenges. One of the most difficult parts of her life was losing her son and heir, who died just weeks after his birth on October 28th 1592

I was entranced from the very beginning. I found myself immersed in the story of King Henry VIII and his many wives, his daughters, and all of the people who lived through that tumultuous time. The narrator of this audiobook was amazing. She did her perfect job of portraying each character with such conviction and emotion that it truly convinced me that I was listening to a classic novel rather than an audiobook.
