The Last Monument Audiobook Download by Michael C. Grumley

The Last Monument is set in a post-apocalyptic America. A group of people are living in some kind of isolated community that has been built around an old, broken down monument-a colossal statue of a dog with its mouth open, as if it was trying to keep the world out. The community has been mostly populated by the elderly, women and children. They live quietly and peacefully until one day they discover that the monument is actually alive and decides to destroy their sanctuary. The narrator, Scott Brick (who also narrated "Plato's Republic") captures the inner thoughts of each character, who are all distinct and creatively written.

"The last of the monuments" is a novel about what happens when a group of wealthy American businessmen decide to build a car-sized monument in the desert. They hire an architecture firm in Dubai and bring on board a team of Afghani engineers to create it - under protest. Although the men didn't share their company's vision, they did agree that they'd do whatever it took to see their idea through.

In the dystopian future, Detroit is a bombed-out ruin. The narrator, Jonah Hill, is a college professor who has returned home after being away for years - only to find his hometown in shambles. Evidently, this isn't the first time that Detroit has been destroyed - but it may be the last. For Hill's family and many others like them, this could be the end of their world's modern society as they know it.

Jeremiah Stone is a professor at Allegheny College who's just written his first novel, The Last Monument. It's not going well - he finds himself heavily in debt and his family farm is being threatened with bankruptcy. To save it, Jeremiah must find the last copy of a book called The Dragon's Child by a writer who died long ago. With the help of one old man, they find the book hidden in an unmarked grave and discover that only part of it remains. The rest was destroyed during the War Between the States. Now Jeremiah must piece together what remains to make sense of what happened over 150 years ago when this bitter battle for freedom took place during a time when American slavery was coming to an end.
