The Girl in the Tower, written by Katherine Arden, is a Young Adult novel set in Russia during the 'Dark Ages', where the power of men has been waning and women have always played an important role. The protagonist is one of many girls who are captured by men who force them to marry and serve their husbands with no escape. One day, as she's hanging laundry, she sees an eagle flying towards her. When it lands on her head, it takes her away from this life and into a new world full of magic.

Over time, Cathal decides that he would be better suited as Sorcha's stepfather, and manages to persuade no less than King Henry II himself to accept him into this role.
