This is a short historical fiction book about two brothers, one of whom falls in love with and marries his sister-in-law. The thing that makes this story unique is that the author does not tell the reader which brother is which and what their relationship to the heroine is until nearly halfway through the book. It creates an interesting mystery to see who is involved with her over these 400 years or so before she was found by the original protagonist, who has come back from America looking for his long lost family.

Ten-year-old Rin Chupeco is about to embark on a journey. Her mother, who wants to escape a brutal husband, has left her with strangers in order to go live with her sister for a year. The first day of school will be the last time that she sees her mother and siblings, until she's 18. If all goes well, she'll then be able to join them. It would just be long enough for them to get their lives together and come back together again by the time that she turns 18. Until then, Rin must endure a challenging life of loneliness and uncertainty, but she knows it will only last a year before everything changes.
