The Gilded Wolves is a 2018 novel by Roshani Chokshi. This fantasy novel based on Indian mythology is told in first person narration with the protagonist, named Katarina, and third person chapters focused on her twin sister Nisha. As the book opens, Nisha has been infected with a "disease of flesh," which causes the creatures she creates to transform into terrible monsters when they feed on human blood. Katarina's father sends her away to train under Jaidev, an aging master who teaches her how to fight while also teaching her about their history as well as other things she never knew.

'The Gilded Wolves' is the first book in a steampunk fantasy series that takes us across continents and time. We meet characters such as Kells, a professional thief who infiltrates gilded palaces of the powerful and wealthy, her partner, Reza, a masterful thief with a knack for playing the game and breaking out of prisons; and the mysterious Silas, their newest client who hires them to steal an ancient amulet.

The Gilded Wolves is an alternate history YA novel in which the Northern American Colonies are run by the British Empire, with wealthy families controlling all aspects of society. When 17-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to help rebels, she only ever imagines learning about the lives of ordinary people. Little does she know that her experiences will lead her on a quest that will transform her into someone else entirely.

Roshani Chokshi's debut novel is an incredible book. It has an epic feel, a deep and rich world, and just enough twists to keep you guessing throughout the entire story. From the beginning, you are drawn into the lives of these characters, who are all so different with their own motivations and desires, that they have a way of making you feel completely invested in them. The audiobook itself is fantastic and I highly recommend it.
