Alice is afraid of the dark due to being brought up without the comfort of light and the starkness that it provides.
Set in the late 1800s, this novel tells the story of a fictional boy who is taken in by a wealthy family who then give him away to an orphanage. This boy has been forgotten and left behind. He is separated from his parents and forced to live on his own with no friends or siblings. He is given up on. The only hope he has of being reunited with his family is through adoption when he's 13 years old.
Ash has a big heart and is really lovable. He also has some interesting habits that make him a little difficult to handle, as well as being a bit of a handful for his parents. Ash really wants to be loved so he wears the perfect disguise, pretending to be abandoned by his mother and father while they are away working at the mines.
