The Death of the Heart Free Audiobook Download by Elizabeth Bowen

The Death of the Heart is a tale about love and life. It tells the story of a woman who falls in love with the man she is to marry, but before they get married he dies on his honeymoon and she is left wondering if their happiness was worth it.

The narrator for this British classic is Pearl Hewitt who gives a soothing and hopeful narration to the story. The Death of the Heart follows many people in a small English town that have lost their spouses or children. These people all have different stories surrounding what led them to become heartbroken and some of these tales are sad, but others are uplifting. In general, I enjoyed listening to The Death of the Heart.

Pearl is a young woman who has a successful career and happy marriage but is dying of sudden heart failure. From the opening chapters, it is hard to tell what Pearl's life has been like. She thinks back on her memories with memories that she could not possibly have experienced firsthand. The sadness and confusion of her thoughts intermingles with the mundane reality of her day-to-day life until she realizes she must make sense of this lost time.

In Elizabeth Bowen's "The Death of the Heart," Pearl Hewitt has been living a life of luxury since she was born as a wealthy widow. But in her late 40s, she decides to live a modest life and travel to Paris where she enters into a deep relationship with an older man who has lost his wife. As they grow closer, Pearl starts to take interest in other people's lives, which begins to threaten their relationship.

Acclaimed in its day as a haunting masterpiece of English literature, The Death of the Heart is now widely considered to be one of Bowen's finest works. It tells the story of Edward McKie, an idealistic young Irishman who experiences great tragedy and falls into self-destructive patterns post-World War One. As he struggles to find meaning in his life, Edward begins to lose himself more and more until he is no longer able to recognize his own reflection in the mirror.

The Death of the Heart is a 1936 novel by Elizabeth Bowen. It follows a woman whose marriage ends in tragedy and her journey to understand herself as she struggles to raise her son alone.
