In The Days of Afrekete, Asali Solomon paints a vivid picture of the life of a Ghanaian woman living in Accra. Solomon's protagonist (Bibi Akan) at one point exclaims, "I want to be reborn again in my motherland." This novel is not only an easy read but it also sheds light on a side of Ghana that many are unaware exists.

The Days of Afrekete follows the life of a simple and beautiful woman named Asali Solomon, who is born into wealth. Her parents are constantly busy and she spends the majority of her time with her grandmother. One day, Asali comes across a man that falls in love with her at first sight, despite her parents objections to him. She jumps at the opportunity to leave everything behind and live an exciting life as a rebel.

This is a story that instead of being told in a straightforward manner, it is narrated by the protagonist's mother. Asali Solomon uses this storytelling style to talk about the distance between mothers and daughters.

The Days of Afrekete is the story of two friends, Mochisi and Njabulo, who share a dream of being able to found their own community in the Eastern Cape. When they decide to do this together, they find that there is no land available. So they take up farming on barren ground with the help of their families and hire a few other guys to help them get started. The life of farming is not an easy one where so much needs to be done with limited resources and sometimes supplies are scarce.

The story is set in the fictional country of Bembereli, land of butterflies and magic mirrors. Young Agnes is blessed with the gift of prophecy that foretells her future as one who will be crowned queen: but just as soon as she gets to Bembereli, a number of close friends are killed and she herself becomes the prime suspect.
