The Day the Cowboys Quit Free Audiobook Download by Elmer Kelton

In the novel, The Day the Cowboys Quit, Elmer Kelton chronicles a day in the life of a ranch hand who is killed in an accident. It is told through first-person point of view as a monologue by the deceased man's voice. His story goes on to describe how much work he put into his ranching life, and how both he and his wife were grateful for their hard work.

One day, the cowboys were tired of working for the railroads and wanted to take a break. They were going to quit until someone reminded them that if they quit, it would be the end of their livelihood. The cowboys walked in front of their boss's house and threw down their guns.

In the early 1950s, a cattle baron named Sam Maverick wanted to be rid of his unwanted herd of cattle. He was tired of being harassed by debt collectors who would not leave him alone and he wanted out of this difficult situation. One day, while watching his herd grazing on a hillside in the distance, Maverick saw a huge dust cloud coming towards them. The group panicked as they recognized the cloud as a herd of wild mustangs. So, what did Mavericks do? He ordered his men to take off in opposite directions and he himself took off running with the herd following close behind him.

In The Day the Cowboys Quit, a group of cowboys are forced to leave their ranch, and they must find some way to provide for themselves while they are trying to make a living elsewhere. The job remains difficult until one day when they come across a trodden-down coyote. This is the inspiration that finally gets these cowboys back on their feet.

The Day the Cowboys Quit is a great story about the old west. The narrator 'Peter Bradbury' does an excellent job of telling this story in an entertaining way. The most interesting part of the book is when he tells the story of Bury O'Rourke, who had been for years known as one of the best cowboys because he didn't miss a shot. The narrator tells us that one morning, as O'Rourke was going to shoot a deer in a clearing while wearing his usual brown shirt and black hat, he saw all his hunting buddies coming back from their hunts and they were wearing white hats and red shirts. This started to make him feel inferior, so he went out that very day and bought ten new outfits including two pink shirts and two blue skirts. After this, even though people still called him Bury O'Rourke, he began to feel better about himself again.
