The Darkest Evening: A Vera Stanhope Novel Free Audiobook Download by Ann Cleeves

The Darkest Evening: A Vera Stanhope Novel is a story about young man coming of age in a small town in the north of England. In a sense, it's about discovering the truth about who you are and trying to live with it.

Vera Stanhope is one of the most enduring British crime writers alive and her detective novels are some of the best, if not the best, on the market. They're atmospheric and intricate but also just very readable in terms of pacing and natural dialogue that doesn't come off as forced or stilted.

Vera Stanhope is a journalist and she wakes up in hospital to find that she has been in a devastating car crash with no memory of the previous evening. Her husband, Mick, is also unconscious. When they recover consciousness, they are still married and Vera thinks everything is just fine as she doesn't remember any of it. But as the days go by, something isn't right. The only way to piece together what happened will be through her recollections of the day before.

In the fourth installment of the Vera Stanhope series, Vera is still trying to figure out who's killing people in Northumbria. A recent murder connection leaves her in a tight spot with a dangerous man and she has to go on the run from him.

When a body is found in a remote valley, Vera Stanhope decides to investigate. Although she's not convinced that the death is anything more than a bad accident, Vera soon discovers what the local police have so far failed to find: the victim is actually a dragon.

As detective Vera Stanhope investigates the murder of a local vicar, the community rises up in protest. There is so much unrest, infighting and bickering going on that it takes a very difficult decision for Vera to not just solve this crime but also to protect her family from even greater danger.
