The Chain is a crime fiction novel by Adrian McKinty that has just been released, and it is in the genre of mystery. It was released on May 25th of this year. The author for this novel is an award-winning novelist who won the Costa Award for Best Novel in 2014 with his first novel, set in Ireland; which was called The Dead Lands.

The Chain by Adrian McKinty had been recommended to me by a friend, and even though I've only ever read one other book by him, I knew it would be a good story. The main protagonist, Sean McKenna, is an estranged father who's on a manhunt with two friends of his, Dana and Benny. They're after the shooter of Sean's young daughter that was killed in an act of retribution for his partner, Cillian. From the first chapter you know that this is going to be an intense, visceral novel that will keep you turning pages until you reach the end. The narrator did an excellent job with her character names and accents which made it extremely easy to tell who was speaking at any given time.

There is a bit of a backstory to the book, but it's not essential to the plot. McKinty opens by explaining that Irish men have a reputation for being tough and hard drinking. The main character, Tom, feels like he has to live up to this reputation even though he doesn't drink alcohol. On one fateful night, Tom witnesses something terrible happen in a Dublin bar and is forced to help with the cleanup. This experience changes his perspective on alcohol, leading him down a path that eventually leads him into crime before he finally decides he wants out of this life and goes on the run.

If a serial killer had an audiobook, it would sound something like "The Chain" by Adrian McKinty. It's the 2008 debut novel of a detective in Ireland who is trying to investigate the serial killings of nine women. The detective realizes that all nine victims have been tattooed with the same symbol: a caduceus. With each crime, another woman is killed and as the mystery unravels and death comes closer to home, every character becomes more suspectible than ever before.

The detective leads her team in finding those responsible for the death and the boy's mother becomes their most important focus. This book has been adapted into a TV series which aired in 2017
