In this mystery by Anne Perry, a woman named Edith is played by Davina Porter who is in her mid-sixties. She has recently been released from prison and was told that she would be given a menial position as a housekeeper for Mrs. Cater. When she arrives at the Cater residence, Mrs. Cater tells her that the job will not be enough to pay off her debt to society because she is still being hunted by debt collectors. Edith agrees to help Mrs. Cater with some of the household chores but when Mrs. Cater catches sight of Edith's watch, which has been stolen, she threatens to turn Edith into the police if it cannot be returned soon.
