A Caucasian woman had also raised him since infancy, but he was found by his birth mother after being left by his father, a shaman on a quest for power. The novel takes place in the area of Tuba City, Arizona where Joe Leaphorn resides.

The Blessing Way is the penultimate book in the Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee Navajo Tribal Police series. The Blessing Way follows him as he reconsiders his career and what made it satisfying in the first place. He meets Mary Landon who takes him under her wing and throws herself into training him for his new job as a private detective.
