The Better Sister: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Alafair Burke
In this novel, Mike Chamberlain remembers a ten-year-old girl named Samantha who saved his life. She was the most important person to him and he's been trying to find her ever since. He finds her in the form of Sophie Amoss, an artist living in New York City. Although she has no recollection of any past, when she learns that his sister is sick and needs a bone marrow transplant from her, she agrees to help out. This novel explores themes of family before exploring the bond between blood relations and those who helped raise them.
Alafair Burke's debut novel, 'The Better Sister', is the story of lifelong sisters Samantha and Sophie. The older sister, Sophie is a caring nurse who works to help people. Meanwhile, Sam is the wild child with a dark past who just wants to be loved and appreciated. As they grow into adults, sisters find themselves on opposite ends of the social spectrum in their attempt to save each other from their recklessness.
The Better Sister is a novel that follows three sisters in a small town as they learn about each other and love themselves in different ways. The narrator is the middle sister, Alafair Burke. It's an atypical story of three women in the fifties who are trying to find their way out of their small town and into the world, but it's also delicate, captivating and insightful.
The Better Sister: A Novel can be listened to as an audiobook and the narrator does a fantastic job. The main character, Sam, is one of those people who has been around for awhile. She's seen some things in her life that have shaped her into the person she is today. Sam has a husband who doesn't make enough money and she wants to quit her job but he refuses. Together they try to figure out how they will make enough money to pay their bills and stay afloat.
A recent trend in literature is to write books that tell stories through the perspective of animal characters. Yet, this trend doesn't resonate with Alafair Burke's book, The Better Sister. The novel features three human narrators instead of an animal narrator because "this kind [of story] is viscerally discomfiting." With three human narrators, readers get a more intimate connection to the protagonist and her life than they would if the novel had been narrated by an animal.
Samantha Desz has just witnessed her father's murder. The only witness is a stranger, also named Samantha. She manages to escape and seeks out Samantha Desz in the hopes of finding her sister and bringing her back home. Sophie Amoss, who owns the family business, is reluctant to help but eventually agrees because she needs to find out what happened that fateful night and why it was so terrifying.
