In the 19th century, a young woman named Elizabeth Peters travels from England to Egypt in search of her missing father. In these tunnels, Elizabeth finds more statues and wall paintings with hieroglyphics. She realises that one of these passages leads to a hidden chamber containing an urn with a figure of a monkey carved into it.

The story follows Mopsus, a young boy who showed signs of great intelligence at an early age. Despite his intelligence, he was shunned and ridiculed because of his appearance. Mopsus lived with a family of apes who took care of him and taught him about the world around him. He could understand the language of animals and received their instruction to guard the balance of the earth from humans who would pollute it with their ignorance
