This is a really good book. It tells the story of three central bankers and their crazy idea to pump money into the economy at low interest rates, with the hope that it would stimulate growth. It doesn't work and eventually leads to the Great Financial Crisis. The audiobook was narrated by Walter Dixon who does a great job of telling this story.
The Alchemists tells the story of three central bankers, Stanley Fisher of the Federal Reserve, Mervyn King of the Bank of England, and Jean-Claude Trichet of the European Central Bank. They are all respected members of their respective global financial institutions. Each one is deeply committed to making sure that their countries' economies don't fall into economic catastrophe and each one believes they are doing what's best. The three central bankers then meet at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where they discuss how to prevent a financial meltdown in Europe. They all have very different views on how to handle it but together decide that international cooperation is necessary in order to stop the crisis from spreading any further.
