Tamarack County is a novel about a small-town family who, having lost everything in the stock market crash of 1929, struggles to regain their foothold in the world.

Tamarack County is the first novel in the excellent Iceberg Slim series by William Kent Krueger. The story follows a young boy, Eric Jackson, as he grows up in South Chicago. Even though he's a model citizen, his heart is breaking. He loves his mother more than anything and everything else in the world. However, when she inexplicably commits suicide, he goes on a rampage of destruction just like his father did before him. In this novel, Krueger expertly weaves together crime and family relationships to create an intriguing narrative about poverty and violence in America.

In the early 1990s, I became an avid reader of crime fiction. While reading one of my favorite authors, David Chandler's "Tamarack County," I was taken aback by the realism in his writing, particularly in his descriptions of the landscape. Movies make a big impact on our culture and if you like that type of experience I highly recommend this audiobook because it is so well written.

In the audiobook version, David Chandler does an excellent job of voicing the protagonist. The book is a short read that you can easily finish in one day and it's a great mystery. This book is highly recommended for fans of thriller fiction.
