Swear On This Life is a novel about the life of Alice and her mother, who struggles with mental illness. Alice finds out about her mom's illness when she is 19 years old and has to come up with a way to support herself and her mom, which leads to much heartache.
This novel is set in America's heartland, a region that has long been associated with the American "melting pot." We find the characters of Lillian and Jim on both sides of the tracks, unable to resist the lure of each other despite their very different backgrounds. Lillian is an Italian-American who grew up in an Ohio coal town not far from a steel mill. Jim comes from blue-collar New Jersey and was raised by a single mother - his father has never been mentioned or seen.
