It is narrated mostly from the perspective of its protagonist, Laurel, and her best friend, Skye. One day, Skye's grandfather asks Laurel to watch over his house while he travels abroad for work. It has been a number of years since Violet and her sister left their home in Chicago for Sunset Beach, Florida. The two are now leading the family business of their parents, the Sunset Beach Biscuit Company. With their mother's passing, Violet must deal with the hard decision to either sell the company or keep it solely as a family affair.

It is the late 1800s in a small fishing village on the coast of Maine. The locals are wary of outsiders and hope to keep it that way, especially when they hear that an Englishman is coming to buy their village beach. With help from Josephine, the local courtesan and town gossip, Will learns about the town's history and its inhabitants. He meets Lottie and her family, who are planning for a different future than most villagers.

Sunset Beach is an amazing read. The story line is heart wrenching, Mary Kay Andrews writes the storyline in a way that will hold you captive until the very end. Andrews manages to keep the listener engaged and amused with some of the tales she has to tell.
