Softly Blows the Bugle Free Audiobook Download by Jan Drexler

The year is 1775. The British army has ruthlessly pushed the Paxton Boys, a radical band of patriots, out of Boston. They have begun raiding farms in rural Massachusetts, terrorizing and killing people at will. And their leader is Nathaniel Thayer--a charismatic man who inspires loyalty by promising justice for all.

The novel goes back and forth between the present day, where Jan Drexler is a British spy, and 1909, when he is a young Jewish boy in Germany. With each chapter focused on one year, it's also set up to be an audio book if you prefer listening to a narrator.

It is the last summer of combat before World War I. Jan Drexler, a German Jew, is working as a cook on board the Graf Spee, which is tasked with attacking British ships in the South Atlantic. The ship's company are to sail from one port to another and carry out their duties without firing a shot. The other cooks refuse to help Drexler in this task so he goes about it himself - making sure that before sailing, each man has eaten his fill and that no one goes hungry.
