The novel follows the life of four people living in a fictional African country called Tondo from 1979 to 1987, from independence through dictatorship to rebellion. This book won the Prix Goncourt - France's most prestigious literary prize - and all 12 jury members said that it was "a universal examination of exile."

In this novel, a small country wakes up to find that the world has disappeared. The land is on an island and everything outside of the borders is water. A group of children set out on an expedition to find out what happened. They meet a group of men who live in a village hidden from sight. One by one, each character learns the truth about what happened, and what's to come for their country.

In the novel, Peko finds out that his daughter Aila is in danger. He and his friend Othman decide to go find her. Unfortunately, they're too late as Aila has been kidnapped by ISIS fighters and sold into sexual slavery. They vow to rescue her.

Dominic Hoffman's narration is excellent. According to Publishers Weekly, he "gives a nuanced performance that captures the evolving life of this complicated character."
