His daughter Catherine is devastated but takes solace in her strong faith. Sing You Home is a novel narrated by four different narrators. It tells the story of the small town of Rose Hill, Illinois and the various people who live in it. Mr. Banning has announced that he's going to make Rose Hill his retirement home and is looking to buy a house for a thousand dollars from Nate McFarland, a veteran who fought in Vietnam. Mr. Banning is surprised when he finds out that Nate will only sell if he'll also sell his house trailer, which also comes with extra space on the property. As they negotiate, we learn about the other characters: Benji Reed, Nate's daughter; Eliza McFarland, her husband and Nate's son; and Tish Sommers, an old friend of Benji's who ended up staying after their divorce and now works at a funeral home dealing with death on a daily basis.

Sing you Home is a story about three families, the Families Sweeny, Shay, and Montague. The three families are all intertwined by their pasts and the neighbor's daughter, Alyssa. Each family has a specific goal for Alyssa - reuniting her with her mother or father. They think this will make Alyssa move on from her issues. In the end, when it's revealed that Alyssa had died years ago before these families came into contact with each other, they have to decide if they can press on with their goals or if they have to let go of what they were hoping to accomplish in order to accept what they had actually done.
