Shoot-Out at Sugar Creek Free Audiobook Download by Max Allan Collins,Mickey Spillane

Mickey Spillane was never as good as his alter-ego 'Mike Hammer', yet he managed to become one of America's most popular mystery authors, thanks to the novels he wrote under his own name.

The first and last books in this novel are narrated by Jack Garrett, a fictionalized version of Martin Garber. The Mickey Spillane character (now called Mike Hammer) has only a brief appearance in the story.

Set in the 1940s and based on the stories of Mickey Spillane, "Shoot-Out at Sugar Creek" is a great story of a small town that has been overrun with criminals. The townspeople are tired of crime and set up an organized shootout to take back their town. The sheriff decides to get involved too and so does the Mobster, 'The Big Guy' from New York.

Jack Garrett is a classic American hero. He's a gambler and an ace detective who has a penchant for solving mysteries (mostly of the criminal variety), but he's also got a heart of gold with an undeniable love for his wife, Carrie. The story is set in 1948 New York City where Jack is investigating the disappearance and death of one of his fellow detectives. Carrie has a knack for finding missing persons, which helps Jack and the agency solve cases.

This is a fast paced listen with a good plot and talented narrator. The twists may be predictable but the pace keeps the listener entertained throughout.

A 1967 novel written by Max Allan Collins, Shoot-Out at Sugar Creek was the fourth Spillane novel to feature the detective. It's a story which is set in 1965 and follows Spillane as he investigates a series of unusual murders that take place during a nearby carnival. The protagonist finds himself pitted against Mickey Spillane, his fictional counterpart, who eventually kills him.
