Shadow Raiders tells the story of Brek Howler and his family as they are being hunted through the portals between worlds by a mysterious group called The Darkspawn. They must find a way to get home before The Darkspawn hunt them down and kill them.

The book starts with our main character's parents being murdered. He leaves his home, traveling to the city of Abadar, on a quest to find their killers. Along the way he meets a young woman that looks just like his mother and is taken in by her family. As he travels deeper into Abadar, he finds out more about where she came from and how powerful these people are. At the end of the first chapter we learn that there is a war going on between good and evil and our hero has been brought into it because of who his parents were.

In the ancient world of Dragondom, a powerful Dragonlord named Kavar led an army to fight against the Dark Ones. But the Dark Ones are too powerful, and that army was decimated.
