Sankofa: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Chibundu Onuzo
In "Sankofa", the author sets out to create a new kind of African fiction. A young black woman, new to Nigeria, has been hired as a teacher's assistant by the most powerful man in the country: Oba Aderotimi. She never expected that her job would have such far-reaching consequences. The novel was nominated for the Caine Prize and is the first in a trilogy with two more novels scheduled for release later this year.
"Sankofa" is a Nigerian word that means "explore and return." It refers to the story of a young woman who leaves her village to find her father, who left soon after she was born. Sankofa explores what it means to be African with the cultural and political perspectives of Africa as a whole. The novel takes place in Nigeria during the 1960s and 1970's and follows the struggles of two families: one from the north, one from the south.
'Sankofa: A Novel' was written in 1992 by Chibundu Onuzo and is a story of a "Chimurenga" - uprising against the white colonialists. The story is narrated by Sara Powell and is set during the period around the Nigerian Civil War.
In a country that was once rich and grand--in a country that was lost, to the greed and the hatred-a man became the hope that sets it free.
The novel is set in Nigeria, specifically the metropolis Lagos, and examines the intersections of class and culture, ethnicity and religion. As such, it tells a story about nation building and identity by exploring three main characters: a slave who becomes an interpreter for the British during their conquest of Nigeria; the son of a revered Yoruba warrior who is captured by slavers; and the daughter of a wealthy Hausa Muslim merchant. It also centers on two dual narratives: that of another slave narrator with no name or history other than his own slavery, and that of Orunmilla, an African King from before Christianity was introduced to Africa who ruminates on what might have been had he not died before Ghana was formed.
When Chibundu Onuzo was a young boy, his father told him that he had to leave Africa and go to America because the white man was coming. When he arrived in America, he eventually made his way back to Nigeria and wrote a novel about the African Renaissance that became known as "Sankofa." The book is narrated by Sara Powell, an American woman who travels to Nigeria in search of her missing brother, and finds herself caught up in the story of Onuzo's novel.
