This is a story about two sisters, who are trying to find their way back to their childhood home. The house belonged to their mother, but she died and they left without looking back. Now they are adults with children themselves and they realize that the house still stands and waiting for them. They have no idea whether it's been kept up or not, but they decide to go back anyway to see. When they arrive there is nothing of what was there before; only memories of happy times together as children. They decide to make enough memories in the house so that their kids can have a happy childhood like theirs.

The book is set in New Orleans during the 1950s, when people of color faced racial inequality and unjust discrimination. The author uses her own family history to show how she feels about race relations in the United States and how her ancestor's lived during this time period.

A woman who had moved away from the area returns to her childhood home only to find her father had died. She starts investigating her father's death and discovers a dark secret that leads to a "rash" of people dying in the area.
